In today’s blog post, I wanted to share my thoughts re: Kat Von D’s recent testimony via Allie Beth Stuckey’s podcast episode 902 last November 7, 2023, on “Becoming a Christian”. Do I love it? Do I hate it? Do I agree with all the backlashes she received in her comments section from Christians regarding her viral baptism video? All of that you’ll directly read from me in this blog post.
I would also like to premise that I’m not one for “tea” and just getting on the bandwagon on what’s famous and currently going viral in our Christian community, but as I was perusing my brain for what topic to blog today, this topic came to mind!
I watched the video podcast of Allie and Kat on Allie’s youtube three days ago just when it came out. I don’t even know who Allie is, I just saw the video recommended on my Youtube (thanks YT’s algorithm!)
Background of Kat Von D
I know Kat because of my makeup enthusiast and artist days. I used her makeup products a ton in my 20’s. She’s no longer involved in the said makeup brand, but I still of course know of her name.
She grew big because of her TV show on MTV called “LA Ink”. She’s popular as a tattoo artist, make-up artist and musician too.
Baptism Viral View
I will link the baptism video here. It’s honestly a beautiful moment to remember for her personally, right? Our baptism is done not because we believe as Christians that that’s what saves us. It is rather, “an outward expression of our internal reality”. Telling the world that we are His Lord Jesus’, and we belong to His family.
The backlash are found in the comment section where I’m not going to quote them here, but many Christians seemingly accuse and take a bite of this beautiful transformation. It’s a disease we have as Christians to be too religious and criticise others before appreciating what just happened and giving glory to God.
The Podcast Interview with Kat
watched the testimony and cried! But apart from her beautiful story, I wanted to focus on one major thing that relates to us and that’s why I’m even making this post!
Kat throwing away occult books, her experience with new age, and other spiritual practices, that obviously I’ve been so vocal of speaking against in this platform.
Kat described herself to be a “seeker” of truth and healing, and that’s why she was even delving deep into that. She described these breathing techniques, nature worship, as “crutches”, not really “answers”. They were “distractions”.
The “Ayahuasca trips”, meditation and silent retreats, she said those who she knows who do them were miserable. “They’re the most broke people, most of them single, they don’t have stability (financial and love around them). There’s always these dramas, doom and gloom, and I was one of them!”
Kat further said, “I look around at my Christian friends and they are no perfect by any means but I want what you have. I love the light that you have. Let’s not be dummies anymore. They obviously haven’t worked for us. Let’s explore this (Christianity/Jesus).”
WHOA, right?
I mean isn’t that what I’ve always said?
Those things are distractions! They are fake solutions. She even used the word “band aids” to wounds.
I actually got convicted to be kinder to our fellow humans who are delving into these things because they’re as hungry and broken as we were before Jesus found us! Most of them are true seekers of the truth.
It changes my prayer now to pray and intercede for them, especially for those in this online entrepreneurs space, to have the humility to repent and respond to Jesus when they finally find Him!
Because Jesus is the ultimate Truth- the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6)
My challenge question to you is, are you a seeker of God’s Truth?
Let me leave you with this from Colossians 2, Paul says it so well.
“Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything. They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty superstitions of spirit beings. But that’s not the way of Christ. Everything of God gets expressed in him, so you can see and hear him clearly. You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him.
When you come to him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything. Entering into this fullness is not something you figure out or achieve. It’s not a matter of being circumcised or keeping a long list of laws.
No, you’re already in—insiders—not through some secretive initiation rite but rather through what Christ has already gone through for you, destroying the power of sin. If it’s an initiation ritual you’re after, you’ve already been through it by submitting to baptism.
Going under the water was a burial of your old life; coming up out of it was a resurrection, God raising you from the dead as he did Christ. When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive—right along with Christ! Think of it!
All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s cross. He stripped all the spiritual tyrants in the universe of their sham authority at the Cross and marched them naked through the streets.
Don’t tolerate people who try to run your life, ordering you to bow and scrape, insisting that you join their obsession with angels and that you seek out visions. They’re a lot of hot air, that’s all they are. They’re completely out of touch with the source of life, Christ, who puts us together in one piece, whose very breath and blood flow through us. He is the Head and we are the body. We can grow up healthy in God only as he nourishes us.”
